There have been ideas floated around in the past about either completely removing this, weakening it, or making it so players have a way to hide from being tracked. The last point was implemented with the Radar Jammer.
I don't think I'd ever fully remove it. It would at least stay for group/friends/customers etc.
I usually try to compare features to reality. I know that might sound daft but it's the basis for many decisions I make.
When you /loc someone, or set your GPS to them, what is the actual logic for how you/it knows where they are exactly? It makes sense in some situations, such as a cop tracking a player that is in range of other cops, but yeah, when someone is standing on a mountain with nobody around, how is it logical to be able to find out exactly where they are?
However, disabling this would make bounty hunting almost impossible. So yeah, maybe it shouldn't take you exactly to them, but just the general area, or maybe their location should lag 5 mins behind. I'm really unsure.
Mike what you said makes sense:
As a civilian, it is easy to locate someone you're looking for as there would really be no reason for you to find someone except if you're taking rev on them, and usually you would already know where someone is if you have rev on them, either they killed you somewhere or they hit you and you can clearly see them, the other reason for you to find someone is you're going to a friend, and that friend can easily tell you where they are.
As a cop, the gps makes sense, and it is almost necessary because of obvious reasons.
I think medics and firefighters should always be able to precisely track a player, for obvious reasons as well.
The way I see it, if someone doesn't want to be found by players, he shouldn't be forced to be found by a gps. /loc suffices, but for public services, something like a radius work work for cops, like you said, if the player is within a radius of 1 cop, other cops can find him on the gps, while if the player is in the middle of nowhere, it logically doesn't make sense to get a precise location. Something like "last seen in ____" or "Believed to be in ____" could suffice.
I don't think a delay of 5 minutes or so on the gps would be any good, so much can happen in this time period, and it can be confusing for newer players, where they would just stand around the dot on the radar and be confused as to why there is no one around.
To summarize my take on this,
IF there is change to the gps, which I'd rather it stays the same anyways. I would say it's changed to something along the lines of:
- Civilians could have the gps limited to friends and groups, or simply toned down to a certain range within the player
- Cops gps is precise when the player is inside the radius of at least 1 cop
- Medics and firefighters should always have precise gps
