Complaints should be public, and why players should have a right to respond

I've not played MCNR for a while, but I still love what Mike has made. I saw this and was quite disappointed:

Most game servers aren't fair, transparent, or show accountability. When I joined MCNR I was genuinely very surprised how open processes were, and could see the positives in comparison to other game servers. It makes players stick around, especially when abuse of powers are rife in most game communities; which makes players leave or turn into trolls.

This is my response to this recent statement to invoke some discussion around this. I want MCNR to stay alive - even though I've not played for over a year, I want to be able to return in the future and enjoy the server for many years to come.

"The forum just isn't built for any of this."
Yes, a dedicated ticketing system offers advantages like assignment and status tracking for staff. However, those efficiency benefits do not require replacing public discussion with private handling. A public kanban board could even be used with commenting.

Yes, Discord isn't perfect, but there's many bots that have structured ticket management while still being public-facing. Complaints can be submitted and then re-posted by a bot and omit the complainant. Administrative convenience and transparency are separate issues.

"We could've always deleted a complaint thread and banned someone [...] if we wanted to hide something."
Having the ability to hide information and designing the system so that information is hidden by default is completely different - players can see when discourse goes off-topic or gets unruly, and staff actions to posts will be noticed if ever abused.

A public forum creates natural accountability because complaints and outcomes can be observed by the community unless actively removed. A private ticket system eliminates that visibility from the outset, reducing opportunities for independent oversight regardless of the current staff's intentions.

"[...] if people know the player they're reporting can see their name on it, they're less likely to report at all."
Protecting reporters is a legitimate goal, but it does not require the entire process to be private. Other gaming communities (and organisations, and judicial processes) manage to balance transparency and protecting accusers without being behind closed doors. The choice is not simply between exposing reporters and hiding everything; there are middle-ground approaches that preserve both safety and accountability.

It can also be argued that 100% transparency and 'exposing' reporters is actually a good thing on MCNR, as users may want to avoid serial-reporters and not engage with them, as some players try to 'bait' players and set them up - it's not always black and white.

"on the idea that the reported player needs a way to "defend themselves" - that's not how this should work"
This presents an overly simplistic view of moderation. Evidence often requires interpretation, context, or explanation, and even seemingly straightforward logs or screenshots can be misleading, as we very well know!

Allowing an accused player to provide relevant information before punishment actions are imposed can reduce incorrect outcomes and prevent players from feeling like the staff/community are toxic or abusive. An appeal after punishment is useful, but it is not a substitute for fairness beforehand.

Okay - I get it. Moving away from the forums improves efficiency, organisation, and prevents a lot of 'fake' forum accounts from being created and wasting staff time. Moving things towards Discord is a great idea, but look at what happened to the previous MCNR Discord - you don't own it, and was effectively forced to recreate the Discord server. Meanwhile the forums are owned and controlled by Mike, preventing this from happening.

The new feedback system looks fantastic. Everyone can vote using their MCNR account which, again, prevents 'fake' accounts from engaging with suggestions and feedback.

However, as mentioned above, moving reports into a private system will reduce accountability and transparency. There can be a move towards Discord, or an in-house system, without being private. The point is not being able to delete or hide things. We know you can do this, but it's about making the community feel like staff and players are not abusing the system and processes, and holding them to account.
See Clink making a fool of himself here lmao

Cyberbullying, racism, and homophobia is unacceptable in 2026. Please report users for saying n*gger and f*ggot to the internet police here.
"Community stuff will be on Disocrd" gg wp once your second account get ban, so we gonna get third discord server.

No it's not. It's generic AI slop.
I actually made a suggestion on the newly created system, where I asked them to consider the poll that I created to see what the playerbase wants. The best part is that your suggestions now need to be reviewed and approved by the staff members before they actually go public xddd. So if they don't like it you will never even make it to the public stage and downright get raped. That's what happened to my suggestion, it was marked as "Unwanted or Not Feasible" and denied with the reason:
The forums are being retired. There is no need for reports to be public. I will make a statement in Discord.

We must remember that this is not a democracy so this topic is probably useless, but still more fun that the new FEEDBACK system

Mike needed website/ingame identity link to chase down that one player who insults his staff instead of teaching staff to ignore obvious trolls

Claude give me a tl;dr of this post and then make a reply why AI generated slop sites are better than the already established forums which has been here since the beginning of mcnr and has had zero issues

Replying/ Voting as a player, not part of the staff.

+1 i do believe we should stay as it should be, Because some player do have proofs that will helps on catching cheaters like aimbot, because everyone do have saved atleast 1 or 2 clips of a guy cheating and they only waiting to someone to reported it and just post it on forums.

*i only wanted to stay here because of those cheaters, just like everyone here wanted that a cheater will be exposed in public.

There are tons of people who post shit, literally uses suggestions website only to troll everyone, staff can now filter those post and delete them so that the website remains clean and only real suggestion are public.

Absolutely agree, before bein part of staff i was a regular player just like everyone, and i got involved in hundreds of player reports and i disagree with Mike in both ways where he says that Reporter should stay anonymous and Reported player cant defend himself and May Appeal for incorrect outcome, but thats my opinion.

I love forum idendity, but Mike Is right, everyone Is able to create an account and pretend to be anyone without accountability, and the forum lacks a lot of tools that we now have with new systems.

Honestly? I really wish the devs had just built a new forum from scratch instead of this ticket/suggestion system. Imagine if you needed your MCNR account to log in, and it had all those missing features and plugins we actually wanted. That would've been clutch.

But yeah, let’s be real, that’s probably never gonna happen.
On the bright side, the Ticket System is actually pretty sweet for the staff and comes with a lot of handy tools. Still, you gotta wonder how awesome things would've been if everything was just seamlessly integrated into one custom forum if that was even possible but idk how things works (programming, website n shi)
^ we complain when AI coded slop sites like the new feedback replaces working systems (forums)

You know what? I love having honest discussions, so let me just chip in a little bit in case this can help.

I like the new UI and I don't mind AI being used (as long as it's not abused and properly polished, which is WIP right now) but I understand the transparency concerns as well, even though I've always resented the cesspit that the old Complaints section was (and the forum in general has been becoming, sadly).

With that said, I can say this:

  • the internal guidelines should be as liberal as possible when it comes to the pre-screening thing; I have personally made a point of approving posts critical of management decisions (otherwise what's the point of a feedback panel in the first place?!)

  • ideally, we need is a carefully calibrated balance between transparency and heavy staff moderation aimed at impartial enforcement of the current rules, as opposed to flame wars and running around in circles;

  • we can accommodate both with the newly introduced engine, but we are yet to recalibrate it to become a bit more transparent.

The final decision is, of course, up to Mike, but here's my two cents if anyone still wants to hear an oldtimer.
No one actually cares it's done with AI, it's just a joke.

What people actually care is to be able to see complaints and provide also other proof and also staff complaints to be visible. The new system should be similar to a forum, where you actually can see all complaints and comment on them. If Mike does that, no one would say anything.

Agreed. I would have the comments pre-screened though, given the old board's history of toxicity.

Infractions speak louder.
Hiding everything so that you can prevent troll comments is the same as removing roads because accidents happen. Completely eliminating a good feature because of some cons is absurd and dumb. You can always ban people, you can also enforce manual verification for new forum accounts like we had before if you really want to.
Pre screening comments is also the same, might aswell implement pre approved ingame chat messages lmfao, you can always delete comments and no one is going to die because someone insulted their family on mcnr forum, they can file a report and it can be taken down and you can ban the accused.
We already have pre screen suggestions so that they can be denied without the GENERAL PUBLIC (who actually play the game) even giving their opinions, so what you should do is completely remove the suggestions sub forum and we can just DM mike our ideas so he can implement the one he sees fit because that's what is going to happen either way?
