While it makes your plane have 1500 health points, you'll have trouble steering it still and have smoke if you had hit a building before.

If you armor a car, it does not repair the bodywork, it just sets the HP to 1500 instead of your current vehicle HP, but for example the tires are not going to be restored. Maybe it's the same for airplane wings? They are considered bodywork I think and you need to repair the bodywork to actually repar the wings? Also another example would be if you miss a car door and only armor it, it wont give you the car door back.
