I think changing the color of PM messages to make it more noticiable is a good idea. Maybe make it more colorful¿ Sometimes it is really hard to notice if someone has msged me because the color is mixing up with the chat.

Or giving players the ability to set a custom color through settings is also cool, maybe for donators only?

What color do you propose? All colors are already used for different things such as red for errors, white for general text, yellow is general for help/tips etc. orange for warnings and so on. There's no other suitable colors. How about I indent it like @mentions?

the old color for @mentions was way better than the current one

The chat is too colorful but the yellow as PM color is a classic everywhere so pretty much everyone's used to it. Adding custom color for PMs in form of hex code in the settings would be good for everyone who wants to modify colors.
While at it, maybe this system should be used for other notifications and client messages in chatbox

uhhh if theres no choice what about changing it to orange and make warnings more like bright yellow? or u could do it with any other thing imo

i have a feeling that most of the players removed all the sound in game cus its too annoying( from my experience ;D)
