A guide to fishing

Fishing was added in Update 1.1 and was the first proper new content addition to MCNR since launch.

Bait shop locations
There are 6 bait shops spread around San Andreas.
They are represented on the radar and map by this icon: .
Admittedly this can be difficult to see sometimes, so they are shown in red below.

Below you can find images of these bait shops and their surroundings to help you find them. Click these images to view the full size.

Fishing guide

Get a fishing rod
To start fishing, you'll need a fishing rod. You can buy a fishing rod at any bait shop around San Andreas or find them scattered around the map at fishing locations. Below is a map of the bait shops around San Andreas.

Buying bait
While at the bait shop, you may also want to buy some bait. Bait will make fish more attracted to your line and therefore you won't have to wait so long to get a bite. Currently it will not affect what you catch in any way, however different bait types may be added in the future with this functionality.

Bait will be automatically used up when you cast the line, or it can be pre-added to your line (no advantage to doing this) by selecting it from your inventory while you have a fishing rod equipped.

Fishing spots
Fishing is possible in any location where deep water is present. The ocean, rivers and lakes are all supported. Here are some common spots with bait shops close-by for selling fish after you've caught them, with the nearby bait shops highlighted in a red circle:

Either stand on a pier/ledge/cliff etc. or stand on a stationary boat. You cannot fish while driving a boat or standing on a moving boat.

Equip fishing rod
To equip your fishing rod, hold Y to open the Interaction Menu, select Inventory and then select your fishing rod. You will now be holding your fishing rod. This will put away anything else you are holding such as vehicle engine/tire repair kits.

TIP: You can type /inv to open your inventory. Alternatively, simply type /fish or /rod to instantly equip your fishing rod!

Attach bait
As previously mentioned, after you have equipped your fishing rod, re-open your inventory (/inv) and select the bait you purchased at the bait shop to attach it to your line. This is not a necessary step however as bait is automatically attached when you cast the line. So why am I even mentioning it?

Cast the line
To cast your fishing line while holding your fishing rod, hold the AIM button (RMB by default) and then while still holding AIM press FIRE (LMB by default). This will cast the line in the direction you are facing (must have deep water 5 meters in front of you).

Line length
Your line cast length is shown on-screen by a progress bar. The fuller the bar is, the further out your line is.

Line health
The health of your fishing line is represented by the color of the progress bar. It will be green at full health, then as you reel fish in and the fish fights, it will turn yellow, orange and then red. Once it is dark red the line will break and the catch will be lost.

Reeling it in
Once you have a bite, you will be alerted to this by on-screen text, an animation and audible sounds of splashing. You may also see splashes in the water depending on your draw distance settings.

To reel the line in, you must repeatedly tap SPRINT (SPACE by default). You may have to tap this many times to reel it in. The faster you tap it the faster the fish is reeled in. If you stop tapping once you have started the line health will start to decrease once a second and will eventually break.

Catch types
There are 4 types of catches:
  • Fish: There are various types of fish or different rarities and sizes to catch. See what you can catch!
  • Good prize: Good non-fish prizes such as cash, weapons and ammo.
  • Bad prize: Bad non-fish prizes such as used condoms or a car tyre. Some have bad effects. We'll let you discover that.
  • Catch lost: There is a chance of the catch being lost - it could have been a fish/good/bad you'll never know.

Fish inventory
Once fish are caught, they will be placed into your inventory. You can open your inventory with /inv and then select 'Fish inventory' at the bottom to view your fish. You could also type /finv at any time or type /fish while holding a fishing rod.

Maximum number of fish you can hold in your Fish inventory is 5.

Fish cooler
To increase the number of fish you can hold in your inventory, you should buy a fish cooler from any bait shop. This will allow you to hold 21 more fishes in your inventory. Selecting 'fish cooler' inventory item will open a list of all fish you caught.

Selling fish
You can sell the fish in your inventory at any bait shop, 24/7 or general store. Simply select 'Sell fish' at the bottom and either sell fish individually or all at once! The price of fish is based on rarity and size. You do not get and more/less money for selling all fish together rather than individually.

Fish stats
Fish caught/sold stats can be viewed in your /stats.
